How to change dictionary form verbs to ta form

1. Ichidan verbs

Change “-ます” to “-た” in the masu-form.

[masu form]	[ta form]
食べます tabemasu	食べた tabeta
見ます mimasu	見た mita

2. Godan verbs

Verbs with “い”, “ち”, “り” in front of “ます” are changed to “った”.

[masu form]	[ta form]
買います kaimasu	買った katta
立ちます tachi(ti)masu	立った tatta
帰ります kaerimasu	帰った kaetta

Verbs with “み”, “び”, “に” in front of “ます” are changed to “んだ”.

[masu form]	[ta form]
飲みます nonimasu	飲んだ nonda
遊びます asobimasu	遊んだ asonda

Verbs with “き”, “ぎ” in front of “ます” are changed to “いた”, “いだ”.

[masu form]	[ta form]
書きます kakimasu	書いた kaita
急ぎます isogimasu	急いだ isoida

Verbs with “し” in front of “ます” are changed to “した”.

指します sashimasu	指した sashita

3. Irregular verbs

There are several irregular verbs, but there is no problem if you learn them each time.
